Police have arrested a suspected bank robber after he went to a Gardena hospital for the treatment of a gunshot wound suffered during the robbery.

The hospital alerted authorities to the whereabouts of Robert Williams, 18, of Gardena and Garden Grove police then arrested him early Friday morning.

Williams’ alleged accomplice, Donny Ontario Chambers, 27, also of Gardena, had been arrested Thursday afternoon while fleeing the Bank of America at 13952 Brookhurst St., Sgt. Joe Johnson said.

Chambers’ arrest occurred after Officer Bill Allison, who was making a routine bank check about 12:35 p.m., interrupted the robbery, Johnson said.

Allison noticed the suspicious behavior of the two men and used his radio to call for backup. At the same time, a teller triggered the bank’s silent alarm.

Both men fled, but officers responding to Allison’s call caught Chambers as he ran away. They also recovered a gun from a nearby backyard, Johnson said.

Williams fled in a car but was shot in the arm by pursuing officers who fired at the car. He drove to his home in Gardena, where he left his car, and then went to the hospital, Johnson said.

Both men were being held on suspicion of armed robbery, and as a standard procedure, the Orange County district attorney’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
