Opinion asked designers, artists and architects how the land in Chavez Ravine should be used:

Dodger Stadium is almost all right, to paraphrase Robert Venturi’s comment about Las Vegas. The new owners of Dodger Stadium will have their own ideas about a state-of-the-art, profitable major league baseball complex. But no development involving public subsidy should be encouraged except the rehabilitation of Elysian Park. That would be a good-faith first step in support of a rich but neglected neighborhood.

Elysian Park is an important recreation asset for its neighboring communities but it is neither maintained nor adequately developed for active use. Rather, it is the setting for Dodger Stadium, one of its unique characteristics. The city and the new stadium owner(s) should commit themselves to transforming Elysian Park into a community amenity complementing the stadium and its uses. It is an opportunity to integrate commercial and public recreation.

By contrast, Dodger Stadium should remain an isolated destination. Commercializing the stadium property wouldn’t do anything for the neighbors except exacerbate traffic. The concerts, religious events and parking-lot activities that now occasionally take place at the stadium complement and broaden what will be increasingly expensive baseball.

Finally, housing development should be integrated with the surrounding neighborhoods, not the stadium. The area’s housing market is a low-to-moderate-cost mix of houses and apartments. Echo Park and its environs accommodate a rich mixture of ethnic groups and art-related professions, as well as the predominant blue-collar population. New housing for this heterogeneous community should be considered in terms of strengthening the existing neighborhood fabric. This would not be a highly profitable accessory to Dodger Stadium, but a set of modest in-fill developments that address existing markets.
