Replacement Goalkeeper a Winner For Columbus

Columbus goalkeeper David Winner, subbing for Brad Friedel because he is playing with the U.S. national team, stopped four of five shootout attempts as the Crew defeated the San Jose Clash, 2-1, on Saturday at Columbus, Ohio, before 18,358.

Todd Yeagley and Pete Marino scored in the shootout round for Columbus (3-1). Shawn Medved had the only goal in the shootout for San Jose (2-3).

Marino scored in the second minute off a long pass from former Galaxy player Jorge Salcedo.

Washington 2, New York-New Jersey 1--Raul Diaz Arce and Jaime Moreno each scored goals in the first eight minutes, carrying D.C. United over the MetroStars before 26,322 at East Rutherford, N.J.

D.C. United (4-0) held on despite playing without John Harkes, Jeff Agoos and Eddie Pope, who are playing with the U.S. national team.
