Council OKs Joining County Taxi Agency

The city has opted to join a proposed countywide program to regulate taxi services.
The City Council last weekunanimously voted to join the Orange County Taxi Administration Program, which would fall under the jurisdiction of the Orange County Transportation Authority.
City officials said they support the program because it would create uniformity in establishing taxi rates, insurance oversight, driver qualifications and vehicle standards. Under the program, each member city would contract with an authorized taxi company, and no other companies would be allowed to operate in that area.
Cities across the county are considering whether to join the program. Some critics, such as the Cypress City Council, have argued that the plan would create more county bureaucracy at the expense of local control.
However, supporters said that administering a program countywide, rather than city by city, makes more sense.
