Pianist Brenda Jones, 17, has won first place in the 1997 B. Douglas Sawtelle Music Scholarship competition sponsored by the Orange County Musicians’ Assn. Local No. 7 of the American Federation of Musicians. Jones, a senior at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, won $1,200. Violinist Jean Millie Kim, 17, also a senior at Esperanza, won the $1,000 second place award. Pianists Kyoung-Eun Min, 25, and Yukiko Nomura, 26, both continuing students at Chapman University in Orange, tied for third place and won $425 each. Honorable mention awards of $150 each went to horn player Rebecca Stock, 18, a student at Cal State Long Beach; pianist Wen-Huei, 25, a student at Chapman; and trombonist Art Fuerte, a student at Cal State Fullerton. The winners will give a free recital at 7 p.m. on May 4 at the Yamaha Music Center, 15455 Jeffrey Road in Irvine. Information: (714) 546-8166.
