Construction Starts on Beachfront Hotel

It’s been nearly 30 years since Hermosa Beach has had a beachfront hotel. But that should change next year.

Developers last weekend began building a hotel on the Strand with 96 units that will be sold to individuals but rented out as hotel rooms when not occupied by the owners.

The three-story Beach House is being built on the Strand and 14th Street next door to the park where the Biltmore’s Surf & Sand Club stood from 1926 to 1969. The 12-story Biltmore was the center of the town’s economy, but eventually fell into disrepair and was torn down.

The Beach House will occupy the lot where the Hermosa Beach Bath House and La Playita restaurant were located until a few years ago.

When both phases of the hotel are finished in 1999, the Beach House is expected to generate about $400,000 annually for city coffers, Mayor J.R. Reviczky said.

“I think it is a great anchor for downtown,” the mayor said. “It is something we’ve wanted for a lot of years.”
