Stanford freshman Bob Bryan had the motivation, the legs and the hometown crowd. His schoolmate and opponent, Ryan Wolters, wasn’t so fortunate. For one thing, most of his fans were back in the Bay area.

So it wasn’t difficult to figure out why Bryan won the Pacific 10 Conference men’s singles tennis championship, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, Sunday at Libbey Park.

Bryan and his twin brother, Mike, of Camarillo, have been coming to the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament since they were 3, when they used to chase frogs in the creek behind Libbey Park. Together, they have won four doubles championships and Bob now has a singles title.

“I’ve lost some finals here before,” Bob Bryan said. “I didn’t want to let this one slip away. It makes it so much more special winning at Ojai, winning the Pac-10. This is one I can hang my hat on for a long time.”

Wolters simply wondered how he could get through the day. The 90-degree heat and the accumulation of matches caught up with him on Saturday.

“I started cramping in the afternoon and then I had to go out and play another doubles match,” he said. “I was really tired today.”

Wolters had enough strength left to win the afternoon doubles championship with teammate Paul Goldstein over Alex Decret and Eric Taino of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1.

Stanford also won the women’s singles championship as junior Julie Scott defended her Ojai title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Vicky Maes of Arizona. In the women’s doubles championship, California’s Amanda Augustus and Claire Curran defeated Katia Roubanova and Elizabeth Schmidt of UCLA, 7-5, 6-2.
