What: Baron Davis’ College Announcement

The cap trick Fox Sports West pulled Monday night was a three-point flop.

For one thing, high school basketball prospects should not be announcing their choice of colleges on live television.

Second, if they do, it should at least be done with dignity.

Third, no announcer should be leading cheers for the school chosen.

When viewers tuned to Fox Sports West during Monday night’s Clipper pregame show to hear Baron Davis make his announcement, they saw an NBA cap, a Georgia Tech cap, a Kansas cap and a UCLA cap in front of Davis. One by one, he tossed them aside, finally putting on the UCLA cap.

Announcer Bill Macdonald then led a small studio audience in the UCLA eight-clap, capping off an embarrassing television moment. In this case, the “Fox attitude” didn’t work. The proper thing would have been to treat Davis’ announcement as a news event, not a circus. It was hokey and amateurish.
