FIRST QUARTER

JAZZ: 32

CLIPPERS: 24

* IN REVIEW: Despite playing at home in the playoffs for the first time in four years, the Clippers came out flat and were outscored, 8-2, at the start. Karl Malone scored after catching a pass in mid-air from John Stockton and also hit a jump shot from the top of the key. Stockton not only made good passes, but also set back picks to free up Malone and Bryon Russell. After making only five of 18 shots in the first two playoff games, Jeff Hornacek came out firing. His first basket gave Utah a 16-9 lead and all five Jazz starters had scored at least one basket. The Clippers got an early dunk from rookie Lorenzen Wright, but most of their shot attempts came from long distance. Loy Vaught was an offensive factor until he picked up his third foul with 18 seconds left and was forced to sit out the rest of the half.

* LEADING CLIPPER SCORERS: Vaught, 7; Malik Sealy, 5.

* LEADING JAZZ SCORERS: Hornacek and Russell, 7.

SECOND QUARTER

JAZZ: 58

CLIPPERS: 42

* IN REVIEW: The Clippers were careless, opening the quarter with three turnovers in a row. The Jazz, meanwhile, rested four starters, including Malone. At one time, their lineup consisted of Stockton and reserves Greg Foster, Chris Morris, Shandon Anderson and Antoine Carr. The Clippers became frustrated when Lamond Murray’s dunk rattled out of the basket. They would miss two other dunks in the quarter. Morris, who was burned by Murray, sank a three-point shot at the other end to give the Jazz a 39-26 lead. Brent Barry, who switched from point to shooting guard, got the Clippers turned around, making a long three-point shot and going the length of the court for a layup to pull the Clippers to within eight points, 39-31. The Clipper rally was cut short when Murray bruised his hip trying to get a rebound and left the game with his team trailing, 43-35. The Jazz starters returned with about four minutes left and Utah held a 16-point halftime lead for the second consecutive game.

* LEADING CLIPPER SCORER: Barry, 6.

* LEADING JAZZ SCORERS: Morris, 7; Carr and Malone 6.

THIRD QUARTER

JAZZ: 80

CLIPPERS: 63

* IN REVIEW: The Jazz opened the quarter making their first six shots. Hornacek extended his shooting streak to seven in a row, including a three-pointer that gave the Jazz a 67-48 lead. The Clippers looked dejected. Only Vaught played with intensity despite picking up his fourth foul with 9:32 to play in the quarter. Eric Piatkowski entered the game and made a short jumper and a three-point shot. Rodney Rogers also made a three at the buzzer as the Clippers attempted a late rally.

FINAL

JAZZ: 104

* IN REVIEW: Jeff Hornacek left early in the quarter, having made eight of his first 10 shots. The Clippers made a run with Rogers opening the quarter with a shot underneath and following later with a monster dunk. Malone took a short rest until the Clippers began their final rally. Bo Outlaw made a shot, Murray had a breakaway dunk and Sealy made three of four free throws. The Clippers were within striking distance, 87-74. Hornacek returned. Barry made two free throws and the Clippers began to press. Behind Stockton, the Jazz regained control as the Clippers attempted one too many long shots and were forced to make desperation fouls. The Jazz, the third best free-throw shooting team in the NBA, made their shots at the end.

* LEADING JAZZ SCORERS: Jeff Hornacek and Karl Malone 8.
