The Bronx’s Crystal Palace Glitters Again
What’s said to be the nation’s largest Victorian-era glass house, the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at the New York Botanical Garden, reopened this weekend after nearly four years of reconstruction costing $25 million.
“A World of Plants” installation of more than 3,000 specimens marks the reopening.
Since its opening in 1902 in the Bronx, the iron-and-glass conservatory had deteriorated from moisture and heat inside and New York weather outside. It was shut down in June 1993 and completely rebuilt. The Haupt is the centerpiece of the 250-acre garden at 200th Street and Southern Boulevard. Information: (718) 817-8700.
