‘Shlemiel’ Hits Its Aim

Laurie Winer misses the point (“Translating Singer: When in Doubt, Send in the Schlemiels,” May 16).
“Shlemiel the First” is not intended to be “funny.” It is meant to be “amusing” and unquestionably achieves that goal. The night we saw it the audience gave an enthusiastic response.
Winer takes this tale seriously and reports the story literally without recognizing the farcical nature of the production.
