Appier Doesn’t Get Support or No. 100

From Associated Press

Scott Spiezio singled home Jose Canseco with one out in the 11th inning Monday to lift the Oakland Athletics to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Canseco drew a walk off Mike Williams (0-1) and Jason Giambi singled. Spiezio followed with a clean single to right to score Canseco easily.

Kansas City starter Kevin Appier struck out a season-high 10 in nine innings, but didn’t get any run support and failed in his fourth attempt to get his 100th career victory. The right-hander gave up one run and five hits in lowering his earned-run average to 2.26.

Willie Adams (3-5) pitched one inning for the victory. Aaron Small got three outs for his second save.

Jose Offerman’s third error in the 66 games he has played at second base enabled the Athletics to score an unearned run with two outs in the third. Rafael Bournigal singled, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored when Offerman fielded Dave Magadan’s routine grounder but threw the ball about 10 feet to the left of first baseman Jeff King.

Kansas City twice wasted leadoff doubles. Chili Davis started the fourth with a double and Craig Paquette was hit by Oakland starter Dave Telgheder. But Mike Macfarlane and Johnny Damon fouled out and Tom Goodwin flied out.
