City to Decide on Seeking HUD Funds
The City Council is expected to decide Monday whether to continue working in partnership with the county to get funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Council members will be deciding whether City Manager Donna Landeros should sign an agreement that would allow both the city and county to collect Home funds from the federal government for fiscal years 1997 through 2000.
The city and county have been involved in the Home consortium since 1993, and the city receives an average of $350,000 a year to fund initiatives such as the Westside Revitalization Strategy and affordable housing projects.
If the council votes to pull out of the agreement, those projects would be severely affected.
Created by the National Affordable Housing Act in 1990, Home funds are allocated based on a formula in which the city is not eligible to receive funds as an independent municipality.
Home funds may be used by municipalities and county governments to remodel and build affordable housing and offer monetary assistance to renters.
