Neighboring Nations Press for Coup’s End
Soldiers from Ghana and Guinea joined a West African peacekeeping force on the streets of Freetown, the capital, increasing the pressure on mutinous soldiers to end their nearly week-old violent coup. Nigerian troops sent to support forces loyal to the government stepped up their presence, protecting a bridge that leads to a waterfront hotel where U.S. military helicopters landed Friday to evacuate hundreds of foreigners. Nigeria has said it will use force to overturn the coup if diplomatic efforts fail.
