City Panel Supports Center for Teenagers

A plan to build a youth center in San Pedro has garnered the support of the Los Angeles City Council’s Community Economic Development Committee and is scheduled to go before the council next week.

The proposal, introduced by harbor district Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr., calls for construction of a 6,250-square-foot facility to be built to the north of the Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro. The project would cost about $428,000, which Svorinich hopes to pay for using a federal block grant earmarked for community projects in the harbor area.

The center would have a music room, billiards, a computer learning center and recreation areas. It would allow the Boys and Girls Club, which provides after-school services for 250 youngsters, to expand its programs.
