Kent: Martinez Threw at Me

San Francisco second baseman Jeff Kent charged that Dodger pitcher Ramon Martinez intentionally hit him in Wednesday night’s game.

“I think I told you guys that Pedro [Martinez, Ramon’s brother who pitches for Montreal] is always hitting me, but I think it’s this idiot,” said Kent, who suffered a bruised left wrist when Martinez hit him in the fourth inning. “Go look at the stats. He doesn’t have enough control of his fastball to throw inside and not hit anybody.

“[Martinez] tries to throw a fastball up and inside and he hits me. It’s messing with people’s heads. Up and in, that’s not a safe place to pitch.”

Martinez declined comment, but Dodger pitching coach Dave Wallace said Martinez didn’t intentionally throw at Kent, who leads the Giants in home runs and RBIs.

“I know Ramon, and Ramon wouldn’t throw at anybody,” Wallace said. “The count was 1-and-2 and we were winning the ballgame.”

Kent, who sat out Thursday’s game, is day to day.

The Dodgers put infielder Juan Castro on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Chad Fonville. Castro sprained his right knee and bruised his left leg sliding into third base on a two-run triple in the second inning of Wednesday night’s 5-1 win over the Giants.

Fonville, who hit .243 for Albuquerque with 22 runs and 11 RBIs, started Thursday night’s game against the Giants.

Park is fifth in the National League with a .213 opponents’ batting average. The Dodgers are 6-3 in his nine starts and 6-6 in his 12 appearances. He gave up one run on a season-high nine hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Dodgers beat the Cardinals, 6-1, last Sunday. Former Dodger second baseman Delino DeShields was four for four in last Sunday’s game. Benes gave up three runs in last Sunday’s loss to the Dodgers. The Dodgers got a scare before Thursday night’s game against the Giants when Darren Dreifort hit Roger Cedeno in batting practice. But Cedeno wasn’t injured.
