Golf Course

In your May 21 article (“Effort Made to Head Off Plan for Golf Course”) you incorrectly stated that the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy made an offer to purchase the property that I currently lease in the Big Tujunga Wash.

No such offer was made, and furthermore, as the holder of a 30-year lease on the property, I remain 100% committed to building a public golf course and equestrian trails that will provide a much-needed recreational facility in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

It was reported that the conservancy believed that money might be available from Proposition A. I find it hard to believe that voters who supported Proposition A envisioned taxpayer money being spent to prevent a private development that will permanently dedicate 190 acres of preserve area and maintain this at no cost to taxpayers, develop over two miles of trails for horses, bikes and hikers and build an 18-hole public golf course, all of which will be privately financed.

I am proud to say that the overwhelming number of residents in Sunland / Tujunga, Lake View Terrace and Shadow Hills are in complete support of the project. We have worked extremely hard to negotiate a compromise to address the very important environmental issues that have been raised and at the same time ensure that our private property rights remain intact. I am confident that we now have a project that is environmentally sound and economically feasible.

If the conservancy were truly interested in buying the property, they should have brought forward an offer many years ago. Unfortunately, a small handful of people continues to delay this project and consequently deny residents of the northeast Valley the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
