How my husband and I enjoyed your May 18 articles on traveling with children (“Driving You [and Them] Crazy,” “Continental Survival,” and “Drive, Leave the Rest to the Kids”)!
The articles brought back memories of the time in 1962 when we spent two months traveling with our sons, ages 6 and 4. After living in Tokyo for 2 1/2 years, our boys spoke Japanese to each other.
The most amusing incident happened in Milan, Italy, when we asked the concierge to get us a baby sitter and tickets to the Opera House. They sent a baby sitter who spoke Italian and English. We arrived back at our hotel room to encounter an exhausted baby sitter demanding to know why, if we were Americans, our children did not speak English! Chip and Rog had also had a wonderful evening. Not once did they admit that they understood English, especially when she said it was time to go to bed.
