Libraries Make Case for Summer Reading

Share

To spark an interest in reading and entice children to give the library a try, most local branches will offer one or two special programs each week over the summer, with incentives to keep kids interested.

This week the Los Angeles Public Library system begins its free summer reading club, “Library Detectives, Inc.--The Case for Reading.”

Students, who can sign up for the club at a local branch, will receive a membership card, a book bag, an award certificate and a reading folder after they read their first library book of the summer, library officials said.

There is no minimum reading requirement for membership and no age limit. Even pre-readers can join if they are read to by a parent or older sibling. Reading kids can earn such prizes as bookmarks, puzzles and gift certificates.

Programs will include magicians, storytellers and arts and crafts through August.

Participating branch libraries are:

* Northridge, 9051 Darby Ave.

* Mid-Valley, 16244 Nordhoff St., North Hills.

* Porter Ranch, 11371 Tampa Ave.
