An Anaheim man died in a fiery crash on the Riverside Freeway early Wednesday, after he was rear-ended by a motorist who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, officials said.

The accident occurred about 1 a.m. in the westbound lanes, where a freeway ramp closure at Brookhurst Street was causing traffic to slow, according to the California Highway Patrol. Mark Cooper, 38, also of Anaheim, failed to stop his Chevrolet Suburban and hit a Datsun in front of him, causing the smaller car to flip over and catch fire, the CHP said.

Bernabe Arellano, 43, died in the crash. He was alone in his car.

The impact caused a pileup involving five more cars. Three passengers were treated for injuries at Martin Luther Hospital in Anaheim.
