Rancho Santiago Adds Four to Hall of Fame

Four former Rancho Santiago College students have been inducted in the campus Hall of Fame.

They are John D. Carlyle, superintendent of Centralia School District; retired Cal State Fullerton professor Ellen Cochrum; Irene Malmgren, chairwoman of Santa Ana College’s psychology department; and Albert L. Salgado, executive director of Latin American Voters of America.

Carlyle, who graduated in 1961 was praised for his accomplishments as an educator who has served on the state Research Committee for the Educationally Disadvantaged and as a consultant at Pepperdine University.

Cochrum, who attended the college in the 1960s, was lauded for her 40-year career as a professor of Russian language and literature. She was born in China to Russian parents and immigrated to the United States when she as 18.

Malmgren, who graduated in 1974, is a licensed marriage, family and child counselor. She worked as a counselor for the college’s Higher Ground Program, which is designed to increase retention of economically disadvantaged and underrepresented students.

Salgado, the first member of his family to attend college, graduated in 1971. Later he served as Fullerton College’s financial aid coordinator and eventually joined the California Student Aid Commission in Sacramento. He now works in the California Community College chancellor’s office in the student services division.
