Center Will Unveil Parenting Mural

Share

A group of 17 youngsters who have siblings who are teen parents will unveil a mural depicting the virtues of male responsibility at the Oxnard Teen Center today.

The boys, ages 11 to 17, volunteered to paint the mural to show their concern for their brothers and sisters who are raising children.

“Art as a tool can be very powerful,” said David Gallegos, a social worker at the Ventura County Adolescent Family Life Program. “In this case, the painting has been very positive toward our youth.”

Images of doves, trees, animals, books, hands and the male symbol decorate the 8-by-20-foot mural, representing the boys’ thoughts about child-rearing. The mural will become part of the teen center’s permanent wall structure.

Refreshments will be served at 1 p.m. at the center, located at the old Oxnard High School on K Street between 2nd and 5th streets. Dancers, speakers and a slide show will precede the unveiling.
