Nonprofit Groups to Sell Fireworks

Share

Volunteers from 25 nonprofit groups will be peddling fireworks starting at noon today in Fillmore.

For the week leading to the Fourth of July, everything from “groundflowers” to “fountains” can be purchased from wooden booths that line California 126 starting from Fillmore’s western city limits.

Fillmore is the only city in the county where residents can purchase and set off fireworks.

“This is a major way for the local nonprofits and churches to get operating capital,” said Deputy City Clerk Steve McClary. “Without the proceeds, a lot of local groups would not be able to perform the services for the community.”

An organization often can net $8,000 to $10,000 at the end of the week, city officials said, and some gross as much as $40,000. The Chamber of Commerce, Boys & Girls Club and Rotary Club will be among groups running booths.

All the fireworks sold are the “Safe and Sane” brand approved by the state fire marshal. Booths typically close by 9 p.m.
