SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 26-year-old Burbank man was arrested Saturday night in connection with an alcohol-related crash that left his sister dead, police said Sunday.

Mario Luna Lopez faces charges of felony drunken driving, vehicular manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance, said Burbank Police Lt. Jay Farrand.

His sister, Irma Campos, 27, also of Burbank, was taken by paramedics to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead of massive internal injuries shortly after the 7 p.m. accident, police said.

Lopez was traveling north on San Fernando Boulevard when he crashed his car into a bridge support of a Golden State Freeway overpass, police said.

On Sunday, he was in custody on $50,000 bail in Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center’s jail ward, where he was being treated for facial cuts, a broken right leg and possible internal injuries, Farrand said.

Lopez is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, either at Burbank Municipal Court or at his hospital bedside, police said.
