Concerned about your neighborhood? Want your voice heard on issues of traffic, public safety and development?

Then you may want to consider becoming an executive board member on one of Simi Valley’s four neighborhood councils.

“It’s a great way to find out about the workings of government,” said Mike Spencer, the city’s interim neighborhood council coordinator. “And it’s a great way to be involved in shaping the future of Simi Valley.”

The executive boards of all four neighborhood councils now have vacancies, Spencer said. Each executive board, representing a quadrant of the city, can have between seven and 13 members. Executive board members--who must be 18 or older and live in Simi Valley--serve two-year, advisory terms.

Each month the neighborhood councils meet and discuss community issues such as property development, traffic, public health, the environment and safety. Recent neighborhood council meetings have focused on plans for a Wal-Mart and the status of the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center.

After residents and city staff weigh in on the issues, executive board members advise the City Council of public sentiment. The neighborhood councils also sponsor community events.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. Sept. 12. Once applications are submitted, prospective board members will be interviewed. In October, the City Council will appoint executive board members for terms spanning Nov. 1, 1997, to Oct. 31, 1999.

For an application or information, call Spencer at 583-6756.
