For more than two decades, a group of senior citizens called the Golden Dreams has presented its gift of song to community groups throughout the San Fernando Valley.

On Tuesday, the troupe was recognized for its service during a ceremony at the San Fernando Recreation Center.

“I want to thank my students for being so active in the community and for giving their time and heart and love,” said music teacher Violeta Quintero, as she handed out certificates to about 15 group members.

Quintero, who has taught senior students how to sing, play and dance to Mexican folk music since 1975, formed the Golden Dreams musical group from among students enrolled in her class at Kennedy-San Fernando Community Adult School in Granada Hills.

About 30 other senior citizen students, who are not part of the touring group, were also recognized for regularly attending the class, which ended Tuesday.

Special recognition awards were also presented to Golden Dreams members on behalf of City Councilman Richard Alarcon, including a special birthday greeting for 92-year-old Lupe Gil of San Fernando, the group’s senior member.

The Golden Dreams opened and closed the ceremony with lively songs and dance routines that had recreation center staff and visitors dancing and clapping along.

The awards ceremony was designed to build self-esteem in students who often feel as though they have been left behind, especially after loved ones have died, Quintero said.

The free class affords seniors the opportunity to learn a new skill, bask in the spotlight during public performances and to feel a sense of belonging, Quintero said.

“I always tell them that they are a member of the class for life,” Quintero said.
