Chiefs Roll Over Sloppy Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are finally looking like an expansion team.
Kansas City parlayed three field goals and a host of Carolina mistakes into a 30-10 victory at home, making the Panthers the first 0-3 team in the exhibition season.
The Chiefs (1-2) took advantage of numerous mistakes and five turnovers by the Panthers, who last season in their second year of existence came within one game of the Super Bowl.
Both teams were without their No. 1 quarterbacks. The Chiefs’ Elvis Grbac, who has taken only 11 snaps in the exhibition season, sat out a second start because of strained abdominal muscles.
The Panthers’ Kerry Collins is sidelined 4-6 weeks because of a jaw broken last week on a tackle by Denver’s Bill Romanowski, a hit Carolina’s Lamar Lathon virtually duplicated against Kansas City’s Rich Gannon. As Grbac’s backup unloaded a short pass in the first quarter, the 260-pound Lathon hit him from his left side, just as Romanowski, who drew a $20,000 fine, did to Collins.
Gannon was woozy for a few minutes but sat out only one play. A team spokesman said he lost a tooth.
Late in the fourth quarter, rookie Pat Barnes of California connected with Joe Horn on a 53-yard pass play to the 5. Then, on a rollout, Barnes juked a tackler and dived into the end zone for a 23-3 lead.
