School Will Get Scoreboard From Farm Sale Proceeds

The lobbying efforts of Costa Mesa High School parents and faculty members seem to be paying off.

The board of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District recently decided to buy Costa Mesa High School a scoreboard with about $14,000 of proceeds from the sale of the district’s farm.

Since the district sold the property surrounding Costa Mesa High School to Costa Mesa for $7.1 million, dozens of parents and teachers have urged trustees to spend most of the proceeds at the Costa Mesa campus.

The campus has more repair needs than other district high schools, the parents and teachers have said. And since the farm was part of Costa Mesa High School, they argued the district should put most of the money there.

Parents and teachers have asked for improvements to athletic facilities, including the installation of an Olympic-size pool.

Trustee Jim Ferryman, who is also a parent of a Costa Mesa High School student, has said it is unbelievable that Costa Mesa High School’s championship water polo team has to drive to Newport Harbor High School to practice.
