Protesters Criticize Emergency Housing

Police with riot shields broke up a demonstration on this tense Caribbean island, dispersing people gathered to protest crowding in shelters housing refugees from the Soufriere Hills volcano. Some protesters also decried what they called government coercion to abandon their island after two years of volcanic eruptions. The protest followed Chief Minister Bertrand Osborne’s refusal to immediately disclose terms of the financial package being worked out for those who want to flee.
