Torrance officials have selected Capt. James Herren as the city’s new police chief.

The decision was announced late Tuesday after a three-month search to replace former Chief Joseph De Ladurantey, who retired in May after being on the job for more than five years. Herren beat out two other finalists for the department’s top job. Seven candidates from the Torrance police force had initially applied.

Herren, 44, has been serving as acting police chief since March, when De Ladurantey took a leave of absence before retiring. He has been with the department since 1974 and has worked in various capacities.

As chief, Herren will be in charge of 233 police officers and the department’s $25-million budget. He will receive an annual salary of $122,000.

“It was a difficult decision because all three candidates were outstanding,” said City Manager Leroy Jackson. “But Herren’s ability to develop a team and create a vision for the role for the department in the future was the very best.”
