Galaxy to Play D.C. United in Cup of Champions

The Galaxy plays defending Major League Soccer champion Washington D.C. United tonight at RFK Stadium in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Cup of Champions. In the other semifinal, Chivas of Guadalajara plays another Mexican League team, Cruz Azul.

In the quarterfinals, D.C. United defeated United Petrotrin of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Galaxy upended Luis Angel Firpo of El Salvador. Guadalajara beat Cartaginas of Costa Rica and Cruz Azul got past Comunicaciones of Guatemala.

The Cup, in its 36th year, is the club championship of the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

Los Angeles will be without leading goal scorer Welton, sidelined because of a bad ankle sprain, but defenders Robin Fraser and Gregg Vanney are expected to return tonight.

The losers will play in the third-place game on Sunday morning, followed by the championship match.

The Galaxy’s MLS game against the Columbus Crew, originally set for Saturday at the Rose Bowl, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
