CSUN to Show Public MarketCenter Revise

Share

Cal State University officials will present a revised plan at a public meeting tonight for the University MarketCenter, a retail development proposed for the north side of the CSUN campus.

The plan drew fire last year from residents and local business owners who opposed the project, saying it would bring noise and traffic into an area already full of retail businesses.

They, along with members of Councilman Hal Bernson’s Citizens Advisory Committee and the university’s own North Campus Task Force, were asked to review the project and make suggestions for changes.

The most noticeable change to the proposal was a reduction of the retail space by 70,000 square feet, bringing the amount to approximately 150,000 square feet.

Frank Wein, CSUN’s director of North Campus development, said the project--on Devonshire Street between Zelzah and Lindley avenues--will cover 18 acres of the north campus area.

Twelve acres will be retail space and parking, with the remainder landscaped, Wein said.

The revised plan, as well as the project’s final environmental impact report, will be presented to the California State University Board of Trustees at its meeting on Sept. 16 and 17.

Also to be available at tonight’s meeting--which begins at 7 in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St.--will be the North Campus Task Force’s concept plan for the entire 65 acres of the north campus, establishing a range of uses that should be considered in future development.

These include a new football stadium, a hotel and conference center and movie and television production facilities.
