Program Would Make Students Money-Wise
Diamond Elementary School students may soon be able to open their own bank accounts with no service charge and no minimum deposit.
The special accounts are part of an educational program to be considered by the school board tonight to teach children how to better manage their money.
The “Save at School” program started by state Treasurer Matt Fong is now in 45 California school districts, according to the treasurer’s office.
Diamond Elementary students would become the first in Orange County to participate in the program, according to officials.
By having elementary school students open accounts with Bank of America, the treasurer’s office hopes to teach children about fiscal responsibility. The program includes 12 classroom lessons such as the origins of money, preparing a budget and paying taxes.
Diamond Principal Lanny Palagallo said the school’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders, or about 400 students, would take part. If approved by the board, the program could begin as early as next month, he said.
The board meets at district headquarters, 1601 E. Chestnut Ave., at 7 p.m.
