6 Arrested in Graffiti Stakeouts at Schools

Oxnard police foiled an annual tradition of vandalism when they arrested six youths attempting to paint and carve graffiti on the buildings at two high school campuses during the weekend.

The teenagers, all from Oxnard, were not identified because of their ages. They were caught at Channel Islands High School and Hueneme High School.

Three were arrested after they were observed painting, drawing and carving graffiti on the walls and windows of the schools. Three more were arrested for probation violations, said Det. Steven Vendt.

Police were joined by Oxnard school officials in the stakeouts, Vendt said.

“It’s become an annual thing, tagging the schools on the weekend before school starts, and the school officials wanted to put a stop to it,” he said.

The youths were all cited and released to their parents. Damage to the school was estimated at about $1,000.

“This is a busy office,” Vendt said. “We get between 600 and 1,000 graffiti cases per month.”
