FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Bass bite fair in mornings. Bob Thompson, Encino, 10 bass on plastic worms. Guide Gary Harrison with Howie Singer, Nevada, several bass, largest 15 pounds 3 ounces, on crawdads at 25 feet. Jim Buckley and son, Pat, Granada Hills, three bass, largest 11-2, on crawdads at 30 feet. Some bluegills and catfish.

18. LAKE PIRU--Bass bite picking up, with night crawlers getting mostly small fish. Catfish best bet, with mackerel accounting for lots of limits. Occasional trout being caught at 50-60 feet by trollers using Needlefish lures.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass have finally begun feeding. They can be seen boiling throughout the lake in mornings and evenings, which has plug fishermen in striper heaven. Jason Mackmiller, Newhall, five stripers at 5 1/2 pounds or more, on Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs. Catfish bite fair.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Fishing fair for most species. Debbie and Kenny Armstrong, Sylmar, five- and four-pound bass, on top-water lures at north shore. Earl Glann, Santa Barbara, 3-8 trout, on Needlefish lure very deep at dam. B.L. Fowler, Los Angeles, 20-pound catfish, on mackerel at narrows.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Catfish best bet, largest 17-8 by Harvey Kunken, Oxnard, on night crawler. Mackerel getting most. Largemouth bass bite picking up, with fish averaging five pounds, biting on white spinnerbaits and plastic worms in mornings, crawdads during the day. Sven Vanderhei, Ventura, 9 1/2-pound bass, on RoboWorm at Santa Ana Arm. Jim Page, Ventura, 25 crappies, on mini-jigs and live shad, Wadleigh Arm from shore.

22. CORONA LAKE--Catfish bite fair to good, with most fish under 10 pounds. Largest 15-6 by Joe Hernandez, Riverside, on mackerel at dam.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Strictly catfish. Largest, 35-5 by Freddie Broughton, Compton, on mackerel at Bubble Hole. Heavy stocking will help accommodate the holiday weekend crowds.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Wayne Wimer, Paramount, catfish stringer totaling 28 pounds, topped by one 12-2. Lots of similar stringers. Crappie bite fair in mornings and evenings. A Kids Fish Free day is planned for Sunday, featuring seminars by a few local pros. Details: (714) 649-9111.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish limits common for those night-fishing with mackerel or mealworm-marshmallow combos. Fish are averaging one-three pounds. Bass fair on plastic worms fished in early mornings and night crawlers fished during the day.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass chasing schools of shad all over the lake, striking shad and shad-like lures. Ken Goerlich, Riverside, striper stringer totaling 33-4, largest 12-2, on shad near inlet.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass bite fair in marina and off dam, averaging 13-14 inches, biting mostly on night crawlers and plastic worms. Some trout being caught by trollers fishing very deep with Needlefish. A few bluegills coming in.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan produced a 44-pound blue catfish and San Vicente yielded 1,686 crappies. Fair bass bites are in progress at Sutherland and El Capitan. Crappie bite best at Hodges.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout very active, with limits of half-pounders very common. Night crawlers and rainbow Power Bait getting most. Largest catfish, a 19-pounder by Eric Wise, Julian, on mackerel at launch ramp.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fair throughout lake. Lots of limits coming on Power Bait and small spinners. An occasional fish to five pounds.

31. BISHOP--Bishop Creek has finally slowed, making for easier fishing. Several limits of mostly small rainbows. North Lake, South Lake and Intake II good for bait- and fly-fishermen. Wayne Serabia, Palmdale, 4-1 rainbow, on night crawler at South Lake.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES--Convict Lake produced a seven-pounder and lots of trout in the three-pound range. Rock Creek Lake and Crowley Lake fishing fair. Lake Mary yielding lots of Alpers rainbows, on a variety of lures, flies and baits. Owens River fly fishermen using pheasant-tail nymphs and elk-hair caddis catching some trout. San Joaquin River good for fly fishermen using gray hackle flies and conventional fishermen using small spinners. Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake slow to fair.

33. JUNE LAKE--June Lake great as Alpers rainbows are biting on green Power Bait as well as Needlefish and Rapalas. Gull Lake fair for trollers fishing deep with gold Thomas Bouyant lures and still-fishing with Power Bait or night crawlers. Silver Lake just as good as June and Gull. Rush Creek produced a 5-3 rainbow for an angler using a salmon egg.

34. BRIDGEPORT--Heavy plants expected throughout the region before the weekend. Bridgeport Lake best bet for boaters, who are still-fishing with night crawlers and Sierra Gold for rainbows from one-five pounds. West Walker river planted with Alpers rainbows Tuesday. Bite is fair for fish to four pounds. Panther Martins, Caliber spinners and Power Bait getting most. East Walker river running fast, making wading tough for fly fishermen. Lure fishermen doing fair with No. 9 Rapalas and large spinners. Virginia Lakes fair for pan-size and occasional larger rainbows.
