Sally Blane; Appeared in Over 80 Films

Sally Blane, an actress in more than 80 motion pictures from the teens through 1930s, has died. She was 87.

Blane, sister of better-known entertainer Loretta Young, died Wednesday in Palm Springs, her son, Robert Foster, said Friday.

Blane obituary--An obituary for actress Sally Blane in Saturday’s Times incorrectly stated the place of her death. She died Aug. 27 at her home in Los Angeles, her son, Robert Foster, said. Blane was 87.

During Hollywood’s golden era, Blane appeared with such actors as Douglas Fairbanks Jr., James Mason, W.C. Fields, Lionel Barrymore, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr.

Blane began her acting career as a child, appearing in the 1917 “Sirens of the Sea.” As a teenager, she appeared in “Shootin’ Irons” and “Rolled Stockings” and with Wallace Beery in “Casey at the Bat.”

Her work spanned all genres, from mystery to horror to romantic comedy. She also appeared in several westerns with cowboy actors Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson, Randolph Scott and Johnny Mack Brown. Among the oaters were “Horseman of the Plains,” “King Cowboy,” “Local Badman,” “Wild Horse Mesa” and “Against the Law.”

Blane came out of retirement briefly in 1954 to appear in “A Bullet for Joey” starring Edward G. Robinson and George Raft. But for the most part, her career had ended by 1940.

In addition to her son and sister, Blane is survived by her daughter, Gretchen Foster Cotta, another sister, Georgiana Montalban, and her brother, Jack Lindley.

A funeral Mass is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Church, 505 N. Bedford Drive, Beverly Hills.
