School Board Seeking Back-to-Basics Ideas
Members of the board of education have unanimously approved persuing a curriculum shift that would require schools to put more emphasis on educational basics.
Board members last week discussed the plan, Above the Mean, for about 90 minutes and agreed on the need to improve Santa Ana Unified School District test scores, which are among the lowest in the county.
The back-to-basics proposal is meant to focus resources on reading, writing and arithmetic.
Schools will be asked for their suggestions on how to implement the plan. One example is teaching reading and writing through other subjects such as history.
An overall plan incorporating the suggestions from each school is not expected until March.
