Grambling Expected to Name Williams

Morehouse College Coach Doug Williams, one of the retired Eddie Robinson’s finest quarterbacks before going on to NFL stardom, will succeed his former mentor as the seventh Grambling coach in history.

“I got the call and it’s not me,” Baylor assistant Lee Fobbs, a candidate for the job, said Tuesday. “They said it’s Doug.”

Grambling officials scheduled a news conference for Thursday.

Northwestern Coach Gary Barnett is the leading candidate to replace the fired John Mackovic at Texas, the Austin American-Statesman reported. The paper reported that Barnett was to have been interviewed Tuesday and a decision could be reached today or Thursday.

Oregon was selected to play in the Las Vegas Bowl, and will face Air Force in the Dec. 20 game. . . . Ohio State Coach John Cooper suspended defensive tackle Paul Breed, who was arrested in a purse-snatching at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport. . . . Ricky Williams of Texas, Nebraska’s Ahman Green and Penn State’s Curtis Enis were selected as the finalists for the Doak Walker Award, given each year to college football’s top running back. The winner will be announced Dec. 11. . . . Brian Finneran, Villanova’s star wide receiver, won the Walter Payton Award as the nation’s outstanding player in Division I-AA.
