Clemson Makes Its Point and Prevails in Overtime

Terrell McIntyre scored 21 points, including the game-tying free throw in regulation, and No. 17 Clemson shut out No. 23 Maryland in overtime for a 78-65 victory Thursday night at Clemson, S.C.

The Tigers (4-2) trailed, 65-61, with 1:18 left when McIntyre made a three-point shot and tied it with the second of two free throws with 16 seconds to go. McIntyre made a three-point basket and had two steals in overtime as Clemson broke a two-game losing streak.

Maryland (3-2) couldn’t hit anything in the overtime period of the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

No. 2 Kansas 102, Emporia State 50--Freshman Kenny Gregory led a 16-0 run to start the second half for the Jayhawks, who were playing without injured Paul Pierce at Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks (7-0) led, 39-30, at halftime, but Gregory had six points and an assist in the first five minutes of the second half.

Pierce sprained his right foot and ankle during Tuesday’s victory over No. 4 Arizona and missed his first game in three years.

Raef LaFrentz had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Kansas. King had 15 points for the Division II Hornets (1-2).

No. 20 Temple 56, Michigan State 54--Rasheed Brokenborough’s three-point basket with 52 seconds remaining gave Temple (3-1) the lead and the Spartans then missed a three-pointer and two free throws in the final nine seconds.

Jason Klein’s three-pointer had given the Spartans (3-2) a 54-52 lead with 1:17 remaining at East Lansing, Mich.

North Carolina State 71, No. 22 Georgia Tech 69--The Yellow Jackets’ return to the Top 25 may be short-lived.

C.C. Harrison hit a running 14-footer as time ran out in overtime, leading the Wolfpack at Atlanta.

The Wolfpack (4-2) recorded their second win this season over a ranked team--both from the same state. In the season opener, N.C. State defeated then-No. 19 Georgia, 47-45. The Yellow Jackets are 4-1.

OTHER GAMES

Led by O’Neil Kamaka’s 12 points off the bench, St. Mary’s (4-1) scored 19 consecutive points to start the second half and went on to beat Calgary, 92-40, at Moraga, Calif. The Canadian school is 5-14. . . . De’Teri Mayes’ basket midway through the second half gave Murray State (5-0) the lead for good as the Racers beat Eastern Kentucky, 64-57, at Murray, Ky. Eastern (0-4) got into foul trouble late in the game. . . . Freshman Ryan Humphrey scored 18 points and center Hootie Wiley had 15 points to lead Oklahoma to an 82-51 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Norman, Okla. The Sooners (5-2) dominated inside against the Golden Lions (1-6). . . . Antonio Granger scored 20 points and Kostas Maglos added 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead Boston College to a 69-66 win over visiting Fordham (1-3). The Eagles (5-2) were without their starting center Mickey Curley (back spasms). . . . Mark Miller and Theandre Kimbrough sparked a 16-1 second-half surge as Illinois-Chicago (6-1) defeated Western Illinois, 78-60, in the KYLT/Coca Cola Classic at the University of Montana in Missoula. Western Illinois is 2-4.
