City OKs Plan to Limit Long-Term Hotel Stays

Share

The City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance to limit the number of long-term guests at local hotels and motels.

The ordinance is in response to code violations found at Lincoln Avenue hotels during recent inspections and to numerous calls from those areas for police help.

City officials said many hotels and motels have been operating more as residences because of the number of guests staying for long periods. A long-term stay is defined as a visit that exceeds 30 consecutive days or 60 days per calendar year.

The ordinance imposes a three-year schedule to reduce the number of rooms for long-term stays from 20% in the first two years to an ultimate 15% level.

Some hotel representatives have objected to the plan, contending the ordinance would hurt business. Others said the reduction timetable was unrealistic.
