Three businessmen have pledged $6.8 million to the Boy Scouts of America, among the biggest gifts ever for the organization’s Orange County Council.

The pledges come from Carl Karcher of Carl’s Jr. fame, businessman George Argyros and Ed Laird, president of a paint company.

Laird, 55, pledged $4.8 million from his estate after his death. Karcher and Argyros each promised $1 million in the near future.

A total of $10.1 million is committed toward the Costa Mesa-based council’s latest fund-raising drive. A $21-million goal has been set to build a new camp in Orange County, improve existing camps, perform inner-city youth outreach work and fund school programs and endowments.

The gifts were announced this week at a gathering at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.

There are 94,000 Orange County youths involved in Scouting.
