Councilwoman Alice B. Jempsa has been honored for her year of service as mayor.

“She has taken that extra time that I think is important to represent our community in an effective way,” Councilman Ronald Bates said Monday. He will serve as mayor for the next year.

Jempsa, who does not disclose her age, said she was proud to launch a citywide tree-planting program. Other highlights included the community’s centennial this year, she said.

Bates, 51, said he wants to uphold the city’s neighborhood feel, work to attract new business, protect city property taxes from being taken by the state, work with the school district to develop Laurel Park and improve traffic flow downtown. He was elected to the council in 1988, and his current term expires in 2000.

In other business, the council reported that the city did well during last weekend’s rainstorms, avoiding any serious damage. Crews had spent much of the fall preparing by clearing storm drains, sewers and gutters.
