Residents Voice Opinions on Movie Complex Plan
Public sentiment about a proposed movie multiplex in Westwood Village ranged from enthusiastic support to animosity at a meeting Tuesday night.
About 150 people attended the meeting hosted by Councilman Mike Feuer to solicit opinion on the 469,000-square-foot project known as Village Center Westwood. The proposed development would include 3,400 movie seats, a supermarket, senior citizen housing, retail space and a library.
Supporters claimed that the project is necessary to revitalize Westwood’s sagging entertainment and commercial center, and lauded the idea of a market in the area. Opponents said the developer’s plan to close Glendon Avenue to traffic and create a shopping plaza will exacerbate the area’s traffic problems. They also complained that it adds movie seats to an area saturated with theaters.
A public hearing on the project is scheduled Dec. 18.
Westwood resident Richard Agay, an opponent of the project, complained later that “the purpose of the meeting was to promote the project . . . not to educate.”
