Singleton to Be Retried in Murder
Lawrence Singleton, who gained national notoriety for raping and mutilating a 15-year-old California girl in 1978, will be retried in the homicide of a Tampa woman beginning Feb. 9, a judge ruled. Jury selection was in progress when Hillsborough Circuit Judge Bob Anderson Mitcham declared a mistrial. He acted after a prospective juror said his face had been shown on television news programs against the judge’s order. Singleton served eight years of a 14-year sentence in California for raping and chopping off the arms of Mary Vincent.
