Forbes Plans to Make Daily Radio Chats

WASHINGTON — Millionaire publisher Steve Forbes, widely believed to be planning a presidential bid in 2000, said Monday he would do a daily 90-second radio commentary and seek to achieve national syndication.
Forbes spent more than $35 million, mostly of his own money, in his unsuccessful 1996 bid for the Republican presidential nomination. He has been preparing for a second campaign in 2000 by forming a pressure group called “Americans for Hope, Growth and Opportunity.”
In 1996, Forbes focused on his plan to replace the income tax with an 18% flat tax that would have ended all deductions except those to charity.
Since the election, he has tried to broaden his appeal to religious conservatives, hardening his position on abortion and other social issues.
