Council OKs $11.7-Million City Hall Expansion
The public works and planning departments will find new homes in an expanded City Hall under an $11.7-million plan approved this week by the City Council.
The council voted 4 to 0 for the expansion, with completion expected for July 1999.
Public works and the planning and building agency are now in other downtown offices because of overcrowded City Hall conditions.
Council members who supported moving the agencies into an expanded City Hall said the plan will create a “one-stop shop” for those seeking permits and other help.
Also, supporters said, the expansion will save the city rent money and be more efficient for city workers.
Councilman Ted R. Moreno could not vote on the project because he had received a $500 campaign donation from the project architect.
But Moreno later criticized the expansion, contending that the city could have bought an existing building near City Hall for less money.
