Woman in Standoff for 39 Days Is Freed
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A 51-year-old woman who kept police at bay for 39 days, defying a court order to be examined, was freed after a psychiatrist declared she was not a danger to herself or others. Shirley Allen of Roby, Ill., will have to undergo another examination to determine her mental fitness, Christian County State’s Atty. Teresa Brown said. The standoff began Sept. 22 when police tried to serve a court order for a psychiatric examination sought by worried family members. The widow was captured Oct. 30.
