Father Albert J. Nevins; Edited Catholic Publications

Father Albert J. Nevins, 82, a Maryknoll priest who was president of the Catholic Press Assn. and co-founder of the Catholic Institute of the Press. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., Nevins edited his high school newspaper and wrote about sports for the Yonkers Herald and Statesman newspapers. In 1942, he was ordained a priest in the Maryknoll order, officially called the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America. He spent his entire life in Catholic journalism, for 37 years at Maryknoll headquarters in Ossining, N.Y., and for the next 11 years in Huntington, Ind., as editor in chief of the Catholic weekly newspaper Our Sunday Visitor. He also edited The Priest and other publications. During his long career, Nevins wrote 45 books and edited several others, and wrote and produced award-winning film and television scripts, including those for the motion pictures “The Story of Juan Mateo” and “The Gods of Todos Santos.” During his retirement years in Florida, Nevins wrote a column for Our Sunday Visitor, edited a bimonthly publication called The Pope Speaks, founded and edited the magazine Diaconate for deacons, and edited Nova, a magazine for priests and assisting pastoral ministry. On Monday in Ossining of lung cancer.
