Jones’ Case Against Clinton

Share

Re “The Only Goal Is Presidential Humiliation,” Column Left, Dec. 16: How refreshing to read Robert Scheer’s column telling the truth about the rabid supporters of Paula Jones. The diatribes spouted by Jerry Falwell and his ilk are at best repugnant. Without a doubt the religious right has done more to cause ill will on the part of those who cannot agree with their points of view than any other group in recent memory. These people would be serving God far better if they kept quiet about supposed indiscretions and infidelities and propounded a true patriotism of loyalty, love and honoring those who are in authority.

Falwell’s tape is only one of a series of things being used to besmirch the presidency. Enough already! We’ve had special prosecutors and investigations and nothing has been conclusive. Get a life, people. Sometimes we don’t all agree about what needs to be done or how it should be done, but that doesn’t make it wrong. Scheer is surely correct this time!

Scheer says let us judge President Clinton only on the basis of the legislation he signed into law and the policies of his administration. Do I understand him to say that Clinton’s appointments of Cabinet members are outside of our judgments? Please tell me how I am to assess Clinton’s appointees who have been convicted of crimes or those that are under indictment or those that resigned under clouds of scurrilous activity. Is Clinton immune to criticism for appointing these people of questionable character?

Despite the fact that the majority of Americans like the way he conducts affairs of state, morally Clinton is of very questionable character.

After completing Scheer’s update on the Paula Jones-Bill Clinton matter, I reached for my dictionary to find the word “harass(ment)” defined as: 1. To worry and impede by repeated raids; 2a, exhaust, fatigue; b, to annoy persistently.

On the basis of this very precise definition it would seem that the real victims in this case are the American people. But how do we sue for relief, much less for recompense for years of utter boredom?

One can almost feel sorry for Jones. It’s obvious that as she stands staring blankly at all of the television cameras she really has no idea what a pawn she has become for every sleazy “conservative” nut case in America, such as the ever-strident Susan Carpenter-McMillan, Paul Weyrich, Falwell, etc. She’s just the dead carcass for the self-serving political-shark feeding frenzy.

Perhaps if our elected represen- tatives--public servants?--devoted as much time, energy, effort and money to affairs of state as they do to the alleged affairs of the Clintons, millions of uninsured children could be insured, Medicare and Social Security problems could be solved, the roster of sitting federal judges would be filled, and a multitude of other neglected and ignored issues could and would be addressed.
