A fire destroyed a vacant supermarket undergoing renovation in Downey, authorities said. The three-alarm fire began about 9:30 p.m. Sunday inside the empty 26,000-square-foot supermarket at 11916 Paramount Blvd., said Downey Assistant Fire Chief Mark Sauter.

At least 25 Downey firefighters and engine companies from Compton, Lynwood, Montebello, Santa Fe Springs, Vernon and the Los Angeles County Fire Department worked two hours to knock down the blaze, he said.

The fire caused the roof to collapse but there were no injuries to firefighters, Sauter said.

Fire officials estimated damage at $750,000 and said the cause appeared accidental.
